I have tested with windows 7, windows server 2008 r2 and a laptop with windows 10 preview. All giving similar results

Windows vista and above use an automated method to adapt the tcp window sizes depending on factors gleaned during the initial tcp connection to the server. Apparently depending on what the windows client encounters during this negotiation, it sets the tcp window sizes accordingly. The link below has some more info concerning this.

Hopefully the FreeNAS guys can provide some info on what kind of tunings they are doing to get this higher speed.
