So, I've been putting this off for a long time I guess. But this person was so passionate with my project that I felt I had to give him an official position. He goes by the name of CiPHER and his real name is Dominique. Please say hello to him!

He is currently working on disk formatting which is progressing nicely. His first additions will be integrated in 0.2 release. Expect a beta release sometime near the end of November.

Why don't you tell us something about yourself, Dominique, and tell us why you wanted to be a ZFSguru developer so badly. ;-)

Hi CiPHER,

And thanks Jason ;), now he will be even more of a 'nuisance' @Tweakers.net ZFS fora.

But credit where it's due, CiPHER is the most avid advocate of ZFS and ZFSGuru at the mentioned fora.

Hello hello!

So I've finally been 'kept off-leash' so to speak. :D

Very exciting news! I'm very happy to work on ZFSguru, and actively lobbied to become a developer on ZFSguru.

So perhaps I should tell you guys why I like ZFSguru so much. Of course I share a lot of passion for ZFS with Jason, making enterprise-storage accessible to mainstream users using a convenient web-interface. Though there are several alternative projects out there which try to do this, ZFSguru has caught my eye for several reasons:

o) ZFSguru is based on FreeBSD, one of the most advanced operating systems with many innovations which benefit many other projects such as AppleOS, iPhoneOS, Linux, Firefox, MySQL and even Microsoft Windows. FreeBSD is the underdog which is very low on marketing, but very academic on software innovations. FreeBSD has been my favorite server operating system for a long time and is a perfect foundation to build a NAS operating system on. FreeBSD has a strong interest in ZFS and because of its non-commercial nature as a true open-source project has a great future as far as ZFS support goes.

o) ZFSguru is a young new project with fresh ideas and built from the ground up. Jason has done a terrific job at building a convenient web-interface as well as creating a very crisp foundation of FreeBSD system image releases which work independently of web-interface releases. This allows for a great future where functionality can be extended using service addons as well manually added services using the FreeBSD portstree system. This opens ZFSguru for both novice as well as more advanced users ready to step into the world of UNIX. This combination is quite unique, as most solutions focuses only on users comfortable with the world of UNIX while ZFSguru tries to find a balance between these two worlds.

o) I've been wanting to develop an Open Source project for a long time, but never really found the right project where my ideas would suit the project. I really hope ZFSguru is the project where I can make those ideas reality and have lots of fun developing it!

As for myself, I'm from The Netherlands and working freelance in the IT-branche, doing a variety of jobs like development and deployment. I consider my development on ZFSguru time well spent!

@Jason, can we show something about the upcoming release already? Would be nice I think. :)

0.1.9 or 2.0??

What focus/area do you have for the project Cipher (besides disk formatting)? Please say service add-ons!!!!!

Service addons!!!!! :D

For the time being I'm working on the upcoming 0.2 release in the areas of advanced disk formatting. If Jason agrees, I can show you something of our progress already!

So far enjoying my time spent on ZFSguru. :)

Fantastic news! Regarding usability, besides no Apple support (which there is now a walk through for)everything is needed here. Sure it could be polished more but I feel services need to be addressed first before the interface is made "pretty".

So with what your working on I take it we will be able to format more than 1 drive at a time?!

Mass formatting is not what i'm currently working on, but probably will be available for the 0.2 release. The idea was that we address the fundamentals of disk handling first and continue with ZFS related functionality.

What i'm working on is a convenient way to format disks with multiple partitions. Think about an SSD which you want to use for multiple purposes; L2ARC, SLOG and a dedicated pool to boot from, for example. Or if you have two harddrives you could format them to have one mirrored pool and one striped pool. It should also allow updating the bootcode without having to reformat.

A screenshot would give you a great idea of how this works, i'm quite thrilled about this feature!

You've got yourself a nice 'developer' title now; enjoy!

And yes feel free to show what you're working on! I've merged some of your changes with 0.1.9-rc3 by the way. :)

Congrats!

To CiPHER, to Jason, to ZFSguru and to us! :-D
One more developer = faster development!

If I may, I would suggest a way framework for extensions. With documentation/example.
Many of ZFSguru users out there have different needs, this way everybody can create extension to their beloved software piece, and Jason or CiPHER could go through, QA and maybe merge into the project?

Yes, I believe CiPHER is working on documentation as well. A good "How to create a ZFSguru service extension" document would be very welcome!
